I've had what was proposed to be "real" absinthe (it wasn't), and oh god do I hate hate hate the taste. I cannot abide anise or black liquorice in any capacity. My own personal hell consists of being forced to imbibe these noxious substances. (no offense to anyone who likes them, heh!)

I can relate somewhat! I actually really hate most black licorice with the exception of Lucky Country Soft Licorice from Australia and Tyrkisk Peber from Finland, the latter of which is hard and kind of spicy with a salty center. In other words, I can enjoy it if it's mixed with something either sweet and flowery or spicy and salty but I've not found any other black licorice besides those two that doesn't make me ill. ;)

Zitat

The attraction of Red Bull is also something else that eludes me. Perhaps I'm rather pedestrian in my tastes... ;)

Well, I'm a vodka drinker, so when I want it to taste very sweet and like candy, Red Bull does the trick. I like it because it reminds me of the taste of a certain candy I had when I was a kid and have not found again for many years.

I bet after it gets diluted to a certain point they can get around it being pure "absinthe" and can therefore sell it. I wonder if they must call it something else besides "absinthe" though.

I like vodka too- but to me, Red Bull and vodka tastes like cough syrup!

But! Have to say I did recently discover Tuaca (yeah, yeah, color me late on the uptake) and liked it a lot. Boy, it's really strong. And I'm not a big Holley either.

But soooo tasty! Vanilla and citrus. Mmmm.

It's actually supposed to be diluted so that it doesn't taste so much like anise and the other, unique flavors come out. Good absinthe doesn't need sugar added but when I had it they put a sugar cube on the spoon thing (looked like a garden tool to me) to sweeten it and that dissolved with the water into the absinthe. It's looks kind of cloudy afterwards so yeah, very possible this process goes around the laws but I'm not an expert.

I really should learn more about this if I plan on opening a night club in the future, shouldn't I? Maybe diluted absinthe glows under black lights just like tonic does?! I'm just not that much of a casual drinker I guess. I go out to dance. And socialize, which is something I started in my late twenties after many years of being too focused on music and dancing. ;)

I used to be a waitress on fridays and saturdays, all night long, It´s hard to be "on duty" while everyone is having good time...

Back on the birthdays thing, today was the birthday of a living legend of music here. We call him the Argentinian Elvis, his alias is Sandro, he is 62 years old, and as usual, hundreds of fat old ladies gathered at his house to celebrate it, singing his songs. Of course I was there. Bizarre indeed.

I just learned there's no absinthe in the US, but Jägermeister. 8o
Seems to me that life in the north isn't that easy, too.

I mean, of all things Jägermeister... really. That stuff used to be something for grandmas with digestion problems until they changed their marketing strategy.

Absinthe is now allowed at the EU. I have to admit I wasn’t that impressed. It makes a nice show with sugar and fire but I never saw any green fairies or something. Maybe I just didn't drink enough? ;)

My grandma used to tell me "come here you f***ing little green elf!" while running after me with a broom. Now I know why

I tryed absinthe only once, a friend brought a bottle from a trip. I only remember my throat burning like hell. And how I hate anise stuff.
My best friend also bought a bottle. One night he was feeling a little but upset so he had 4 shots of absinthe, he was in the tub and passed out. He woke up few hours later noticing that he had tryed to cut his wrists. And he wasn´t THAT depressed... So I believe in the power of real Absinthe!

The hallucinogenic properties of it are highly, highly exaggerated from what I understand. At least lately anyway. I think the active constituent was a lot more, er, active before it was banned.

I wonder how much of the past alleged hallucinogenic properties were due to mass consumption of the alcohol, or to the thujone, or just frankly to the expectation of performance being its reputation has always seemed to precede it. The mythology surrounding it seems a lot more romantic and vibrant than the actual libation!

I totally understand that feeling ... but yes, I live in a place of plenty. Yet people always want whatever they cannot have no matter how much they do have, I feel. So nice things should be appreciated, even box set DVDs.

That's right, no legal absinthe at least. But just as the drinking age is 21 years old, there are ways around liquor sales laws. People are crafty everywhere in the world, like saying goes, "rules were made to be broken." I may not always fully agree but people have ways of bending them.

Zitat

I mean, of all things Jägermeister... really. That stuff used to be something for grandmas with digestion problems until they changed their marketing strategy.

Oh yes, it's very popular. I don't drink it often but an old friend of mine would drink many shots of it until she was ill! :(

It is very fun and presentational when done right but I think it's more for show than anything. I also think it's partly because it's a mysterious drink not originally made for leisure (I think I recall it was medicine originally) and people associate it with hallucinations, the "little green faeries" inside it as the story goes. The chemical that did that isn't added anymore, so it's just a once banned liquor that has this dark past.

Thank you, it was thujone that I couldn't remember the name of! From what I recall, it was added in addition or made so that the levels of it were higher back in the day. That and that romantic notion that a green faerie was inside must have given it reputation.

Wow, I love onions. I grew up with Polish family so if I didn't eat potatoes, onions, sausage, or cabbage I might have been disowned. Bell peppers are great ... with onions. But yes, that's another thread: What Not to Cook for Holley.

Well, I visit friends in other parts of the country whenever I can. Too bad I live so close to O'Hare, since Midway's Southwest Airlines has really wild airfare to TX, like $79 round trip if you do standby. I feel like I'm constantly at O'Hare. :(

Absinthe is flavoured with wormwood (artemisia absinthium). This plant includes a poisonous substance, thujone. In former times the thujone was judged to cause the addiction to absinthe as well as the damages of body and mind that followed it, so the drink was banned in most countries.
Modern studies showed that most of the damage was actually done by the alcohol. There’re absinthes with over 70% vol. alcohol.
So today you can be sure you don’t do your body a favor with drinking this stuff, but it’s almost the same with Jägermeister. And it tastes much better! *And* you've got that show.
Besides, there are absinthes without any anis for those who don’t like the taste.

Sorry for showing off, but plants are one of my favorite hobbies. :sch:

When I was a little girl and alcohol ads on posters and in newspapers were still allowed (back in the eighties… good old times…) the Jägermeister advertisement was really bad. It was so very old fashioned and ridiculous. Just matching the name and the deer logo.
There were well dressed men and women around 50, sitting in an armchair, holding a kind of cognac glass, smiling frontal at the camera and explaining something like “I drink Jägermeister because I like to celebrate my well-earned evening at home”.
Nobody would have *ever* thought of selling that stuff as a fancy fashion drink.

The absinthe that I tasted was someting like 75% vol. alcohol and was a mix between anise and toothpaste. Now I will try to find some other flavour (acting as if I were a teenager, but I have to confess I left my rockstar life many years ago...)

I'm almost sure it's called a "blunt" here. ;)

Argh, yes, call me Debbie Downer or whatever, but I experienced two drug-related deaths at age fifteen and that was enough for me. Even before my teenage brain could decide to try anything other than alcohol, any curiosity I may have ever had is long buried with those two bodies of old friends. Even now, nearly fifteen years later, I still cannot forget the power substances had over them in life. That is how people are shaped, though.

My poisons of choice are caffeine and vodka, in that order. I don't even smoke but I still use the "cool" icon.

I've never seen this and I dare not Google for photos! Meanwhile, the term "goth" is so odd. I try not to let labels bother me in life but this term sometimes does. Just when I argue with someone that I am not "goth" I realize I'm wearing mostly black, find many morbid things lovely, and visions of Eric Draven dance in my head.
