...no thought of the day for today yet?

ok, take this:

whatever you feel and think today creates your future.
god is the highest savorer, the possessor of everything and the best friend of everyone.

today/tonight my thoughts are of my dear friend in new orleans who opted to stay as part of the Hurricane Response Team. Gustav could reach level 4, but he tells me it's really only a blustery level 3 at the moment. (Katrina was a 3). he's very nonchalant about these things. in fact, when I called him to check up on him I *knew* he wouldn't leave with everyone else... in fact, he and some of the Response Team were having a barbecue to use up the meat! when life hands you a hurricane... have a barbecue, apparently...

mandatory evacuation of the city had been ordered at 01:00 yesterday morning, but he's staying behind to help keep the city intact and to help those who can't leave. he did the same thing for Katrina. in my hospital we are still seeing people who are transplants from that storm, who refused to leave their animals behind. we already had one today, so I imagine we'll be getting a lot more, being dallas is one of the main sites for louisiana's hurricane crises. two million people in the new orleans area are already evacuated. around 10,000 are left. my very capable friend and his team will be there to help people in hospitals and such.

I don't believe in any god to pray to, so my thought of the day is to think of my friend strong and resilient because the coming hours or so are going to be rough for them next door... and thoughts of well-being for those people who are determined and loyal enough to bring their beloved pets with them as they leave their homes. and I'll be sure to give extra hugs and kisses to my own two purring furball kitties tonight. also keeping in touch with my friend to soothe my own mind that he's alright.

(feeling pensive a little at the moment, sorry for the downer interlude in our Thought of the Day thread)

(and though the storm might hit corpus christi, texas, it's waaaaay far to the south of me and vorbedacht, so we are not in any danger. corpus is about... hm, maybe 8 or 10 hours away by car)

my thought of the day is thankfulness that the storm wasn't as bad as anticipated- the levees held and the flooding is not as bad as they expected it to be. also thankful that I heard from my friend there, who was rather chipper, quite safe, and again, nonchalant about the whole thing. crisis averted. for the most part. comparatively speaking. gustav is a mere category one.

I forgot how far it was from here. Last time I was there it was January. The entire beach was a jellyfish grave.

I haven't been to Corpus in over 10 years, I think. It's been a while since I've left Dallas to go somewhere else in Texas. Yeah, I remember the beach being a jellyfish graveyard too. I remember wanting to take one back home with me to dissect and stuff but I didn't have a cooler and ice to keep it on, and didn't want the hassle of traveling even further south in Texas with a dead jellyfish in a cooler in my car, having to replace the ice, and finally return home. I thought about it though. The jellyfish here are pretty cool- they're really big! And still have the capacity to sting you even when dead, from what I understand.

I love jellyfish.

"memories
memories blur into dreams
light bleeds into truth
everything unforgiven
everything becoming hollow
loneliness consumes
and there is no way back
the places you played
the places you called home
the people you thought you loved
all of them
reduced to a memory of another life
a life you never lived
all the yesterdays that can't form a tomorrow
all the tomorrows that never came from yesterday
a new beginning
because forever
is never forever"

Instructions on How to Cry

Putting the reasons for crying aside for the moment, we might concentrate on the correct way to cry, which, be it understood, means a weeping that doesn’t turn into a big commotion nor proves an affront to the smile with its parallel and dull similarity. The average, everyday weeping consists of a general contraction of the face and a spasmodic sound accompanied by tears and mucus, this last toward the end, since the cry ends at the point when one energetically blows one’s nose.

In order to cry, steer the imagination toward yourself, and it this proves impossible owing to having contacted the habit of believing in the exterior world, think of a duck covered with ants or of those gulfs in the Strait of Magellan into which no one sails ever.

Coming to the weeping itself, cover the face decorously, using both hands, palms inward. Children are to cry with the sleeve of the dress or shirt pressed against the face, preferably in a corner of the room. Average duration of the cry, three minutes.

- Julio Cortázar, Cronopios and Famas.

“Anyone who doesn’t read Cortazar is doomed. Not to read him is a serious invisible disease which in time can have terrible consequences. Something similar to a man who has never tasted peaches. He would quietly become sadder… and, probably, little by little, he would lose his hair.” Pablo Neruda.
