Covenant live in Lahr DDT 13.06.09

Transferring this here because although I get what you all are saying, I don't have the German proficiency to express myself in the way I'd like.

So anyway. Seems that Covenant had a less than stellar show and people are annoyed by that. I remember seeing Cruexshadows for the second time and their show was less than stellar, comparatively speaking.

However, it wasn't a catastrophe, wasn't the end of the world, and I was very happy to see them again.

I also remember seeing Project Pitchfork in Germany as well- the first time I saw them live was in 1998, when they were here supporting 242. They were *fantastic* both in Dallas and in Austin. When I saw them in Germany and Belgium (I think it was Pitchfork in Belgium and not just Spilles' solo project but I can't be sure), they were mediocre to so-so. But I was still thrilled to have a chance to *be* there and see them live. I also remember how rude I thought it was that people were booing 242 in Koeln when they had to stop their show earlier than desired due to *laws of the city*, which 242 had no control over.

In short, I don't mean to ramble, but I guess I do not get why people are hyperfocusing on one show that was perhaps not their best. Are they consistently substandard? No. If they were, neither you or I would be here.

Looking at the clips, I don't see what the problem is. Granted, I wasn't there. But unless the guys were stumbling over themselves incoherent like Sid Vicious post-Sex Pistols, personally I don't really care if the singer botches some lyrics here and there as long as they keep the show going. Everyone (including me) was sauced in Poland and Covenant definitely had a couple of missed cues, but *everyone* was having a blast. Energy is reciprocal- the performer can do all they can do to set the tone but sometimes the audience sucks, or the sound system sucks, or whatever.

Looking at the clips, I mainly wish that I was there, and had the *opportunity* to complain about the show (or not). I get a twinge of longing and maybe just a touch of envy that you guys get to see shows, *many* many shows, all the time that many of us would love to see so much that we can't express it. So it's a bit odd for us to be across the ocean(s) reading about something you seem to take for granted that we would love to be a part of- missed cues, botched lines, weird soundsystem, or not.

My usual caveat applies the same as when I normally burst in with dissent: not meaning to piss anyone off, and I apologize if I come across as patronizing, whining, preaching, or judgmental. It sincerely isn't my intent to do so. Just wanted to articulate some observations is all. The main point being, I honestly don't see what is catastrophic about a show that, while perhaps not being their best, was far from disastrous.

If what I saw on the clips *was* disastrous, I'd be there critiquing as well- er, actually, maybe not- as I probably might not say anything due to my being the type of person who thinks of extenuating circumstances, ie, "Oh, Cruexshadows have been touring so much and they're probably tired- not their best, but they're trying, and I'm having a good time", or "Pitchfork seem a little off, but damn, I'm happy to see them, especially abroad!". Maybe Spilles was up all night until 10:00 in the morning drinking or whatever- I don't care- I was still happy just to be there. If it isn't an unmitigated, indisputable disaster, then it's what you make of it, I think.

Things can go differently live, especially if you know, the bands are actually playing the music. One of the most enjoyable parts about seeing a live show is knowing you won't be hearing an exact replica of a studio recording played over a louder PA system.

From the video clips, I don't see much that is actually going wrong. The audience looks bored, but, German audiences usually look kinda docile to me anyway. But then again, before getting into this type of music around 2002 I used to go to many local punk shows with friends. Plus, both times I've seen Skinny Puppy live, the crowd was extremely aggressive. So when I watch the clips and see people standing around, I wonder to myself what planet are they on. Not to be mean about it or anything!

The last time some of us have seen Covenant was back in 2006, three years ago! In comparison, amount of shows you can go to in Europe is rather excessive. There is only one major festival in North America, how many in Germany alone? Enjoy what you have!

Short list of concerts attended since getting into this type of music:
2004 - Skinny Puppy / Otto von Schirach
2005 - none, think I missed A23 one week due to the fact 3 people died during an emergency room shift on my 17th birthday, one of meningitis, so I was under a control protocol until lab results came back. This ruled out the possibility of going to a concert.
2006 - Architect, Covenant, Terrorfakt (?)
2007 - Skinny Puppy, Haujobb
2008 - None, had to miss Seabound due to class, and had to miss ohGr later in the year due to a family emergency.
2009 - Missed Seabound due to yet another emergency, Kinetik festival.

Again, the youtube clips looked quite good. I read the complaints and just don't get it.

Thank Ilex for moving this here.

No offense, I find this discussion kind of funny.

Facts:

- I do know they kick ass live.
- It can happen to all of us, that you have a crappy day at work, so maybe show could be better. I haven´t seen the clips, so I can´t judge. Even if I had, I wouldn´t judge.
- It takes 2 for tango. This means, if crowd is in a bad mood, the band can kick ass and it won´t matter, it will be a bad show no matter how hard the band tries. If the band is not having their best show ever and crowd is in a bad mood, then show is even worse. And, if crowd is in a bad mood, they will sense everything even worse and reviews will be hell.

Band feeds the crowd, crowd feeds the band. Both are one during the show.

Anyway, I can´t seem to find the point here. It could be better... yeahp, it can always be better. Maybe if you see a band all the time you get bored? Yeah, maybe you do, I wouldn´t know. I know show in Buenos Aires was way better than Amphi 2008, but again, it takes 2 for tango, and GOD I enjoyed the Amphi show!!!

So GCA formally invites Covenant to come dance tango with us again, and also invites all forum members that would like to join us in a big tango fest :)

I also suggest a "GCA Covenant tour 2010".

Idea for GCA Covenant Tour 2010 is *amazing*.

Let's drink some wine and ~tango!~

And Panda, yes, that was exactly what I was trying to say.

Good post, ilex. In general, too many people love to moan and complain, especially in the net.

Not that some words of criticism wouldn't be welcome. There's no evolution without input which makes you think. But most people just whine and instead of giving some constructive criticism. What I do not like is unprofessional behaviour or when a band apparently doesn't give a rats ass about their audience, for example. And we all know that our Covenant boys are among those who care deeply about their fans! ;)

For any band on tour, there are good days and not so good days. On Covenant's last club tour I saw a good gig (Cologne), a pretty sub-standard gig (Dortmund) and an excellent, mind-blowing gig (Hamburg) within just a few days. And as you say, many things depend on the audience and how they react.

Upon reflection I think I'd say something if critique were warranted. But considering how long it took me to finally decide that, I believe I'd think my words through long and well to make sure they truly are constructive, and not just a knee-jerk emotional response.

I tend to be the type to step back and take subjectivity into perspective too...

Or maybe an even broader perspective is necessary. Covenant operate in a huge grey area between minimal techno, noise, house, ebm, electro, the dreaded "i" word, and so forth. If you listen to a wide enough array of electronic music, you tend to notice that there isn't anyone else like them around.

Really.

Think about it.

I'm not even talking about industrial music, referring more to electronic music as a whole.

You could listen to a bunch of high tech Raster-Noton type music, but honestly, it's kinda boring live. While there is no doubt that it is cognitively engaging, sometimes it's more fun to have a music that lends itself more to movement and less docile static intake. Or you have the formulaic boring German techno thing, which is fine. Throw in some overdrive and shouted vocals and you get what most people born yesterday consider "industrial". But what if you want something more substantiative?

Not asking that anyone worship Covenant for being some totally unique entity or anything of the sort. But merely asking that people put consider everything under a fuller context and broader perspective. Most industrial bands are utterly mediocre, and I am saying that as a 21 year old who has only listened to this type of music since around 2003.

Since there isn't any set formula to their work (-other than precision and attention to detail when it comes to synthesis and sound generation), it's probably best to consider everything with open mind.
