Good point, tangentially speaking. Here we've always had to actively *seek out* this stuff- in Europe it just falls in your lap! :mauer:

Well, comparatively speaking anyway.

It was rather different in the pre-MTV 70's. Kraftwerk's album "Autobahn" reached Billboard #5 in 1975. And that was 5-track album with the entire A-side consisting of the 23-minute ultra-minimalistic "Autobahn", a song about traveling on the highway, sung in German.

A few years later, in 1977, the second best electronic song of all time; "I feel love" by Donna Summer/Georgio Moroder, charted at #6 on Billboard. Again a very long, completely monotonous, all-electronic megahit. Made in Germany.

These songs charted well in the UK too (even better actually), but not that well in Germany and not at all in Sweden.

So back in the pioneering age of electronic music the US was actually more progressive than most of Europe. And the same thing happened in the 90's when The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim and The Chemical Brothers rose to superstardom in the US. So there is actually a rather big acceptance for electronic noise in the US. It's mostly a matter of presentation and attitude, it seems. If the surface is right you can get away with surprising things... ;)

Here in Canada, we're pretty serious about supporting our countries artists. There's something of a bylaw that states that on radio and TV stations, at least 20% of the content has to be from Canadian artists.

Looking at the charts in Canada back in the 90's, I do see that those three artists were pretty popular. But I suppose, in my case, I didn't even hear of them until I became a regular user of the internet because of the town I live in, where all the elderly love country and all the young kids love rap and pop. The only other person in town that's into the EBM and all its sub-genres is my sister, and only because I got her into it.

But then again quite a few of the most influential EBM/industrial artists came from Canada: Skinny Puppy, FLA, parts of Ministry...

And in the 80's you had Men Without Hats and Rational Youth. Both bands were on heavy rotation in our boy-rooms around 1983-84.

So perhaps the protectionism pays off? ;)

Oh damn. I was going to kind of do a 'answer my own question' thing with those tidbits, but I was getting pretty damn close to being late for work and I just posted whatever I had. And now, I will have to add another somewhat negative response.

I'm not saying that some great EBM/Industrial artists never came out Canada. I'm just saying that the focus lately has mostly on rock, pop, and rap, making anything electronic very underground. And even the underground stuff mostly plays Canadian artists, and any non-Canadian stuff is usually remixes of Nine Inch Nails stuff. Barely any European EBM/Industrial artists get played. And even in the record stores I've been to that specialize in the underground stuff don't have a very large section devoted to dance music, and they don't carry ANY European EBM artists. The only place not online that I have seen an European EBM artists album is Best Buy, with VNV Nations Futureperfect. And it was all dusty. :(

It could be just Manitoba, though. The last time I was out of province was when I was 17 when I went to British Columbia, where the legal age for clubbing and bars is 19. So I've never had a chance over that. What I've heard, it's good though, considering that's where FLA and Skinny Puppy came from.

Joakim, thank you for helping me fiigure out what your age is. I have become fascinated with that ever since I saw you in Chicago. I just wanted to say you look very nice in these photo's and your hands in particular caught my attention. When you come back to Chicago, it would be nice to buy you a Bloody Mary. Oh and I do agree with you about Canadian artists. FLA will be here tomorrow. I am curious to see if Bill remembers me.

RE: Russia tour Covenant Photos

What brilliant pics!!! :-]

I am so jealous - it makes me feel sort of homesick when there are pics of gigs and I couldn't be there

By the looks of it the show(s) were excellent and I hope you had a fantastic time. Thank you for the pictures.

There is, but lately that acceptance seems to be more in the sense of novelty, generally speaking- aside from the underground scene, I mean. I could be misperceiving of course, but in Europe electronic music seems to be more par for the course so to speak. A more ingrained part of the culture. Here, my perception is that the attitude towards it tends to be more of a "Oooo, shiny and different!" kind of thing. Probably yeah, due to the Mtv culture that is *so* pervasive here. I'm sure you have that too over there, but here does seem a lot more dominant.
Does that make sense? I hope that makes sense...

The photos of the St. Petersburg concert are great. I think I've never seen Daniel Myer without his hat and his glasses before.
Seems like you have had a really good time there!

protectionism

Well, as far as economics is concerned: protetionism doesn't pay of (as says Adam Smith).
But for "music" in general it seems like protection can pay off, as it did and
still does in France (where radio stations have to broadcast a certain percentage
- 60% ? - of "french" music).
In Germany politicians tried several times to introduce a similar law as our french neighbours pioneered, but there was too much opposition to these intentions.
Finally it didn't matter as we have a growing market for modern german artists since about six years (and they even sing german songs and not in englisch as it had to be during the 90ies). Does anybody knot the "Hamburger Schule" - that's the genre I mean.

What about Eskil singing in Swedish? Would be nice, I guess.
I'm quite sure it would be working. Lately there was this "dota"- something-techno-hit in the
german charts - it seems like swedisch music doesn't have to be with english texts either
in order to be successful over here.

By the way - as covenant were touring through russia - why not a russian version of
hmmm ... "stalker" (as the film "stalker" the song maybe refers to was made in Russia).
"I myself am pursueing the same instinctive course as the veriest human animal you can think of - I am however young, starring at particles of light in the midst of great darkness." (John Keats)
