Subterfugue For 3 Absynths

On the Metropolis Record’s limited edition release of Skyshaper
there is a song on the bonus CD titled “Subterfugue For 3 Absynths”.
Thee time I have listened to this, and still do not understand.
Aside from it technically being a fugue,
it is forty-two minutes and eight seconds of pure repetition.
War and Peace was easier to digest.

Perhaps the musical play on words has meaning
Subterfuge for three absinthes (absents)

Fugue - noun Music - A polyphonic composition based upon one, two, or more themes, which are enunciated by several voices or parts in turn, subjected to contrapuntal treatment, and gradually built up into a complex form having somewhat distinct divisions or stages of development and a marked climax at the end.

Synth - noun Informal - A synthesizer

Subterfuge - noun - An artifice or expedient used to evade a rule, escape a consequence, hide something, etc.

Absinthe - noun - A green, aromatic liqueur that is 68 percent alcohol, is made with wormwood and other herbs, and has a bitter, licorice flavor: now banned in most Western countries.

Any thoughts are appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Andreas

we have had this discussion before on the forum - as many of us love the track, while others are just not so sure.

Anyway to give you a little insight, and maybe a little more understanding, check out the answer from Joakim in the 'Answers of the Week' Section, under the heading 'Subterfugue'.

That should give you a good start point for even greater reflection!!!!

have fun listening :D

oh and by the way - I totally recommend Steve Reich too if you are not already familiar with his work.

You sure have come to the right place ;)

We had that discussion just days after the release. I think we started up with a half silly approach, involving absinth mainly, but worked our way towards something more serious. Eventually we ended up asking for an explanation, which Joakim was so kind to give in full. You'll find it here: Subterfugue...

Great minds think a like - its just too late at night for me to think about actually linking the discussion - so kudos for being more on the ball!!!! ;)
